Karpacz
This is one of those places in Poland that does not need to be particularly introduced. More and less demanding travelers will find their way here, regardless of whether it's a summer vacation or a vacation in winter, spring or autumn. Those looking for adventure on mountain trails, beautiful views and, above all, the fresh air and freedom offered by the mountains will surely find themselves in Karkonosze.
KThe Arkonoše Mountains cover an area of about 650 km², of which 185 km² lie within Poland. The highest peak of the Karkonosze is Snowball, rising 1,602 meters above sea level and considered the "Queen of the Giant Mountains." From its top there is a view that, under favorable conditions, reaches up to 200 km. Sněžka is the highest peak in the entire Sudetenland and is one of the main landmarks of the region.
Hiking trails in the Karkonosze Mountains is a real treat for mountain hiking enthusiasts. Mountain hiking trails, biking trails, Nordic walking trails, rock climbing, a toboggan chute or a golf driving range are just some of the attractions that await tourists. In addition, the region has rope parks, year-round ice rinks, aqua parks, spas, tennis courts and numerous restaurants and cafes. With a wide range of activities on offer, there is something for everyone, regardless of preferences.
The Giant Mountains are visited annually by some 2.5 million tourists, and in 1959 a Karkonosze National Park, which was listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1992. The park offers 112 kilometers of hiking trails and numerous ski trails.
Hiking trails noteworthy in particular are Main Sudeten Route, which is the pride of the Karkonosze Mountains and leads, among other things, through the Karkonoska Pass to Karpacz. Another important trail is The Road of Polish-Czech Friendship, connecting the two countries. For lovers of less traveled paths, we recommend Path over the Regals (starting at Hala Szrenicka) and the trail High Stone, which leads from Death Bend to Sunflower.
Attractions of the region
One of the biggest attractions of Karpacz is Wang Church, which was built in 1175 in the village of Vang, in southern Norway. Made entirely of wood, including Norwegian pine, the church has survived for hundreds of years thanks to the resinous properties of the wood, which is resistant to harsh climatic conditions. Interestingly, the structure was built without the use of nails, and its decorations resemble those used in Viking boats.
In 1832, following a decision by the local congregation, the church was sold and the funds raised from the auction were used to build a new building. In 1841, the winner of the auction was the King of Prussia Frederick William IV, who paid $80 (equivalent to 320 crowns) for the church. After winning, the temple was dismantled and transported by sea to Germany, and from there via the Oder River and overland route to Karpacz, where it arrived in 1842. The Wang Church is one of the region's most unique monuments, attracting tourists with its history and unique architecture.
Wild Waterfall is a debris dam that was built to protect against floods by damming up the waters of the Lomnica River. Construction of the dam lasted from 1910 to 1915. The source of the Lomnica River is located at an altitude of 1407 meters above sea level. The waterfall is located near Olympic Street, and there are numerous paid parking lots in the area - both municipal and private. The nearest parking lot is only 150 meters from the dam. The facility lies within the Karkonosze National Park, and the hiking trail that runs through it provides convenient access to the attraction. One of the biggest perks of Wild Waterfall is the opportunity to walk along the dam's crest, which offers a scenic view of the area. There are also several popular ski resorts nearby, such as. Winterpol Summer Park and Karpacz Ski Arena with a cable car to Kopa, open all year round.
Karpacz for children offers many attractions that will provide toddlers with unforgettable memories. Children can enjoy playgrounds that are open year-round, as well as numerous walking trails and excursions. There are ski kindergartens, an ice rink, tobogganing hills and the opportunity to take part in sleigh rides. For the active, there are rope parks, toboggan runs and snowtubes. Unforgettable adventures also await in the Western City, where children can take part in a bank robbery, or in a Fairy Tale Park, which transports toddlers to the world of fairy tales. In addition, local museums are available for sightseeing enthusiasts: Museum of Sports and Tourism, Toy Museum, Giant Mountains Secrets and Lego Museum.
Lift to Snezka is a great option if you want to conquer the highest peak of the Krkonoše Mountains, but you are not fit enough, are with small children or simply have little time. The cable car to the Kopa is the easiest way to climb the Snowballs. After just a 7-minute drive, you'll find yourself at 1,377 meters above sea level, and then it's just 2.5 kilometers to the summit. This is a quick and convenient option to enjoy the panorama of the Sudetenland without taking a long hiking route.
